Zidan Iqbal Will Represent Iraq

The 23-year-old Zidan Iqbal will play for Iraq at FIFA World Cup 2026. He was born in Manchester, England, and has also played in the UEFA Champions League. Even so, his roots are tied to Pakistan.

His father is from Pakistan, which makes him a British Pakistani. His mother is Iraqi, while he himself holds British citizenship. Because of that, he was eligible to represent Pakistan, Iraq, or England.

A Talent Who Rose Fast

Zidan’s love for football started early. He began his journey with local side Sale United, but his talent caught Manchester United’s attention soon after. At just nine years old, he joined the academy of one of the most famous clubs in the world.

In 2021, he made his senior debut for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. That appearance also made him the first British South Asian player and the first Iraqi footballer to feature in the competition.

How He Started His International Career

The young midfielder began his international journey with Iraq’s Under-23 side, the country of his mother. Later, he was promoted to the senior national team.

Iraq’s Return After Four Decades

Iraq are also returning to the FIFA World Cup after almost 40 years. Their last appearance in the tournament came in 1986.
