When a knockout match is level after 90 minutes, football has a set process for finding a winner. It runs from extra time to a penalty shootout. Here is how each step works.
Extra time
Two extra periods of 15 minutes are played, with a short break between them. Teams change ends and the match continues as normal.
Substitutions
Many competitions allow an additional substitution during extra time, though the exact number depends on the tournament rules.
Penalty shootout rules
- A coin toss decides which team shoots first.
- Each team takes five penalties, alternating.
- If a team cannot be caught, the shootout ends early.
- If it is level after five each, sudden death begins: one kick each until one team scores and the other misses.
Who can take penalties
Only players on the pitch at the end of extra time are eligible. If a team has fewer players because of red cards, the other team reduces its eligible kickers to match.
