The UEFA Champions League changed its format from the 2024-25 season. The old eight-group setup was replaced with a single league phase. Here is how it works, step by step.
The league phase
Thirty-six clubs play in one combined table. Instead of facing every team, each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. Opponents are drawn from four pots based on club ranking.
Who qualifies for the next round
- Places 1 to 8: go straight to the round of 16.
- Places 9 to 24: play a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining round of 16 places.
- Places 25 to 36: are eliminated.
The knockout rounds
The round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are played over two legs. The final is a single match at a neutral venue.
Why UEFA changed it
The new format guarantees more matches between top clubs and gives teams a chance to recover from a poor start. Critics say the longer fixture list adds to player workload.
